Twenty-one students in the Colorado-Wyoming scored at or above the 90th percentile. I wrote to the teachers eligible students to encourage them to apply. Five students submitted applications. Four underclassmen competed for the regular (Award I) AATG/PAD study trip and one senior for the senior award.
The committee reviewed the written applications, including transcripts and teachers' recommendations. We looked at overall academic record, the ability to express themselves in German and in English and for maturity, self-reliance, sense of humor and flexibility that are required for a sojourn in a new culture. We interviewed the students on the CU Boulder campus in mid-March. I would like to thank Helena Shirah for serving on the committee.
Our study trip nominees were Donnie Dressen, a student of Dagmar Haney at Centennial High School, for the regular trip and Sonja Lampert, a student of Nancy Null at Coronado High School for the senior trip. Donnie was chosen as an alternate for the regular trip.
Our chapter had one of the highest percentages of students with scores above the 90th percentile and so we received enough money that all 21 students above the 90th percentile received book awards from the German Embassy, Langenscheidt, and the Austrian Instiute as well as certificates from the Chapter and medals from AATG, or readers purchased with the extra funding.
I was happy to be able to present awards at Fairview High School at their Awards Night, and to the Broomfield High School students in their class. This helps keep German visible. I wrote a letter to the school principals commending the students and their teachers.
This was my last year as testing chair for a while. I turn it over into the capable hands of Dr. Klaus Hanson at the Univ. of Wyoming. I have notified the national AATG office by email. I thank all of you for you participation and your help, it has been a pleasure getting to know you and your students.
Respectfully submitted,
Kandance Einbeck, Ph.D.
