Twenty students in the Colorado-Wyoming scored at or above the 90th percentile. I wrote to the teachers eligible students to encourage them to apply. Five students submitted applications. Four underclassmen competed for the regular (Award I) AATG/PAD study trip and one senior for the senior award.
In our chapter, there were two students selected for alternate awards:
Prizewinner Alternate: Donnie G. Dressen, student of Dagmar Haney
Senior Alternate (also alternate for AATG Endowed Scholarship and Studienstandort Deutschland program): Rebbecca Romine, student of Pam Fedie
The committee reviewed the written applications, including transcripts and teachers' recommendations. We looked at overall academic record, the ability to express themselves in German and in English and for maturity, self-reliance, sense of humor and flexibility that are required for a sojourn in a new culture. We interviewed the students by telephone.
Our chapter had one of the highest percentages of students with scores above the 90th percentile and so we received enough money that all 20 students above the 90th percentile received book awards from the German Embassy, Langenscheidt, and the Austrian Instiute as well as certificates from the Chapter and medals from AATG, or readers purchased with the extra funding.
This was only year as testing chair. I turn it over into the capable hands of J.T. Hughes at the Colorado State University. I have notified the national AATG office by email. I thank all of you for you participation and your help, it has been a pleasure getting to know you and your students.
Respectfully submitted,
Klaus Hanson, Ph.D.
