Supporting Lifelong Language Learning through Building K-16 Communities
Cynthia Chalupa is an Associate Professor of German and German Language Program Director at West Virginia University. She received a B.A. in German and English at the University of Michigan and M.A. and doctoral degrees from The Ohio State University. She studied at the Universität Bonn and was a summer graduate instructor at the TU Dresden. She has taught all levels of language and culture as well as language teaching methods and general education courses. She has served as an AP Reader and co-
chair of the AP German Exam Development and the National German Exam Committees. She was an advisory board member for the ACTFL/ETS Praxis II Exam and the ACTFL-DLI Standards Setting Committee and is an OPI tester. She currently serves as the co-chair of the National German exam and as a representative on the NECTFL Board of Directors and the AATG Executive Board and steering committee. She has co-authored a teacher’s handbook on teaching with TV programming and Neue Blickwinkel, an intermediate language and culture textbook. Her research spans literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, assessment, foreign language pedagogy, GTA training, and media literacy in the classroom. She has presented at regional, national, and international conferences and held workshops on teaching with authentic video, assessment writing/rating, and program articulation. She has taken students to Germany for over sixteen years and serves regularly as a faculty member in the Fulda University international summer and winter university programs.
