The description should be in final, publishable format and free from spelling and grammar errors. It should give an accurate, clear, and concise description of what will be presented. The description must be written in third person format avoiding the use of “I”, “you” and “we.” The name of the presenter(s) or an institution should not be included in the body of the proposal. If you use acronyms, please spell out the words first and place the acronym in parentheses following the words. Since you are entering your submission into a database format, please avoid using symbols, marks or letters, because they may not translate into the final printed session description.


All accepted proposals will be printed in CCFLT Program as submitted during the Call for Proposals; however, CCFLT reserves the right to edit when necessary.

Creative Language Teaching: Using Visuals in the Classroom

Conference III 

Learn about the power and potential of creativity in the language classroom. Engage with visual strategies to support student’s creative thinking in meaningful ways and to design creative learning experiences that can be adapted for different teaching contexts. Participants will revitalize their teacher toolbox for next week’s class using creativity to support language acquisition in the classroom. This workshop is appropriate for all languages, levels, and teaching contexts.

About your Presenter:  Anne Cummings Hlas is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where she teaches methods courses for future language teachers, Honors courses on creativity, and Spanish language courses. In her classes, she regularly incorporates improvisation and creative thinking techniques to promote interpersonal communication and collaboration. In the last few years, she has continued learning about creativity as a coach for Odyssey of the Mind and as a rater for the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Her research interests include high-leverage teaching practices, creativity, and technology. Her first book, Practical Creativity: Activities and Ideas for your Language Classroom, was recently published by Cognella Academic Publishing(2019).

Imagine a classroom where all students have multiple opportunities to contribute their thoughts and unique perspectives. A classroom where all students have time to think and reflect. A classroom where all students feel heard and respected. In this workshop, participants will learn about and engage in structured protocols for questioning, reading, writing and discussion that create a space where every voice can be heard and everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the collective learning of the group.

About your Presenter:   Julie Doyle taught high school and middle school Spanish before accepting a position as World Language Coordinator for Jeffco Public Schools.  Her work includes the development of curriculum and resources, professional learning, and supporting students in their attainment of a Seal of Biliteracy.   She is passionate about helping teachers make learning languages as effective, equitable  and engaging as possible so that all students can experience the joy of learning another language.

Have you forgotten what it was like to really enjoy your students and the subject you teach? Ever felt bored teaching your class? Got students who are bored, too? How about some inspiration for third and fourth quarter? This presentation is for levels 1-AP. Fun, creative, productive and practical learning activities will be presented in English with French examples. Thirty plus years of activities and hand-outs will be available. Examples: Aquarium, Name Game, Storytelling, Mystery Dinner, Academy Awards, Petit Prince, Auction, Theater, Planes-Trains-and-Automobiles, Back to the Future, Let’s Go Shopping, Who’s that Old Bag (reflexive verbs)? Subway, CPR, Francophonies and Orphan Clothing. Just to name a few.

About your Presenter: A newly-appointed CCFLT Lifetime Member, Kitsy Sorensen has been an active member and presenter at our organization since the 1990s.  Having taught French to students from first grade through twelfth grade, Kitsy has gained a wealth of knowledge on best practices in the world language classroom and is driven to share these with her fellow educators.
